Thomas Vermaelen arrived at Arsenal in 2009 and quickly established himself as a combative, goal-scoring centre-back, netting 13 times in 110 appearances over five seasons and eventually captaining the club. The Belgian international was a mainstay of Arsène Wenger's back line before injuries took their toll, and he later went on to captain his country and play for Barcelona.
