Despite being born in England, Andy Townsend represented the Republic of Ireland internationally and became one of the more influential midfielders of the early Premier League era, playing for Chelsea, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough. A combative and technically accomplished box-to-box player, he later became a well-known TV co-commentator.
