Alan Thompson was an attacking midfielder with a powerful shot and an eye for a free-kick, making his name at Bolton Wanderers before a move to Aston Villa in 1998 added a further 46 appearances. The Englishman later moved north to Celtic, where he became a key part of a hugely successful side under Martin O'Neill, winning multiple trophies north of the border.
